What is it for ?

This medicine is used to numb the eye temporarily. This will allow your doctor or eye specialist to examine or treat your eye without it being painful.

Before using this medicine

This product should not be used in patients who are allergic to tetracaine hydrochloride. Make sure that you tell your doctor or eye specialist if you have had an allergic reaction to tetracaine or other local anaesthetics in the past.

Tetracaine hydrochloride should not be used in patients who are also taking drugs called "sulphonamides". Your doctor or eye specialist will make sure that tetracaine is suitable for you before you receive any eye drops.

Tetracaine hydrochloride eye drops should not be given to premature babies.

When your eye has been numbed it is important to keep it free of dust and bacteria. Your doctor or eye specialist will make sure that your eye is properly protected.

Local anaesthetic eye drops can damage the surface of the eye if they are used too much or too often. Your doctor or eye specialist will make sure that this does not happen.

If you are pregnant (or if you think that you might be pregnant) you should tell your doctor or eye specialist before this medicine is used. It is possible that you will still receive it, but it is also possible that an alternative may be used.

You may feel some stinging when the drops are first added but this will quickly pass off. Your sight may also become blurred for a few minutes.

Make sure that you do not try to drive or use dangerous machinery until your sight has returned to normal.

Using this medicine

The usual dose is one drop of solution into each eye which requires treatment. Occasionally, more than one drop may be used.

The doctor or eye specialist will put the drops in your eye for you. You may be asked to press on the inner corners of your eyes for a minute to prevent the solution draining into your nose and throat. The Minims unit should then be discarded.

It is very unlikely that you will suffer an overdose from using this medicine, but if you suddenly feel unwell after receiving the drops, telle your doctor or eye specialist.

After using this medicine

Occasionally, the skin around the eyes can become sore after using this medicine, but it does not usually cause any unwanted side effects. If you find that you have itching or soreness around your eyes that is causing you a problem, you should tell your doctor or pharmacist.
